Introduction about Foil's Head Coach - Coach Eugene

​

Coach Eugene is a passionate and excellence-driven fencing professional with over two decades of experience as an athlete, coach, and international referee. He began fencing at the age of 13 in 2001 and went on to win multiple Cadet, Junior, and Senior championships, representing Singapore at the 2005 and 2007 SEA Games.

His lifelong journey in fencing has shaped his belief that true excellence comes from both technical mastery and strong character — values he now strives to instill in every student under his care.

Coaching Journey

​

From 2014 to 2024, Coach Eugene coached across several institutions, including Pasir Ris Crest Secondary School, Chung Cheng (Yishun) Secondary School, and the Singapore Sports School. He developed comprehensive foil programmes built on strong technical foundations, tactical decision-making, and dynamic conditioning — producing medal-winning athletes at both inter-school and national levels.

In 2023, he served as Men’s Foil Coach for Team Singapore at the SEA Games, where his fencers achieved remarkable success — earning 3 Gold, 1 Silver, and 3 Bronze medals across two editions.

From October 2024 to October 2025, Coach Eugene held the position of Assistant National Foil Coach, contributing to the development of Singapore’s high-performance foil team. His responsibilities included designing national training cycles, leading international competition preparations, and mentoring elite athletes representing Singapore on the global stage.

International Refereeing and Expertise

A two-time Olympic referee (Tokyo 2020 and Paris 2024) and ranked among the Top 3 Foil Referees in the World (2020), Coach Eugene brings a deep understanding of the sport’s highest standards. His extensive experience officiating at World Cups, Grand Prix, and World Championships allows him to offer his fencers rare tactical insight — helping them think, adapt, and perform like world-class athletes.

Coach Eugene believes that great fencers are built on character before results. His philosophy emphasizes clarity, consistency, and composure, encouraging athletes to take ownership of their journey and to approach every challenge with humility and purpose.
